Fitting a Trigger Wheel and VR Sensor

With more and more people turning to modern ignition for their classic cars, I thought I would post a little bit on how I mounted the Trigger-wheel, Sensor Bracket and Sensor on my Classic Mini.

First stage is to find TDC on number 1 cylinder during the compression stroke. Do this using the screwdriver on the piston technique, place a screwdriver down the spark plug hole onto the piston gently, then turn the engine clockwise till the screwdriver reaches it highest point. Mark on the crank pulley and timing teeth with white paint or tipex.

Then I used a large screwdriver locked into the flywheel with the starter removed then removed the crank bolt. I am using a trigger-wheel and sensor bracket from www.trigger-wheels.com. For the sensor bracket you will need to remove the two lower left hand side chain cover bolts, you will required longer bolts to mount the sensor bracket.

Now place your trigger wheel on the damper and screw in the crank bolt to slightly hold the trigger wheel. Place the VR Sensor in the mount and space it correctly away from the trigger wheel, 1mm is best. Turn the trigger wheel so that the sensor is pointing to the middle of the missing tooth, make sure the crank pulley stays in its same position. For the Megajolt or Nodiz it requires the sensor to to see the tooth at 90 degrees BTDC, the sensor will be currently be seeing the crank at TDC, so turn the trigger wheel only 9 teeth clockwise.

Now drill a hole in the the centre section for a roll pin to hold the trigger wheel and damper locked in position, then tighten then crank bolt.

All Done :)
